20 Feb How to Prepare for Your Outdoor Maternity Session in London
Let’s start with a vision. Think about soft golden light filtering through the trees, flowing dresses catching, and your hands resting gently on a growing belly. But what about making that dreamy maternity session a reality? That’s another story.
Between unpredictable weather, outfit dilemmas, and the simple reality of pregnancy fatigue, preparing for an outdoor maternity session can be overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. With a few smart choices and some tricks, your session can be a stress-free experience that results in beautiful pictures.
Best Locations for an Autumn Maternity Session in London
Autumn in London offers a stunning backdrop for maternity sessions, with golden leaves, soft light, and romantic settings. Here are some of my favourite locations for capturing beautiful autumn maternity pictures:
- Richmond Park,
- Hampstead Heath and Pergola Garden,
- Regent’s Park,
- Kew Gardens,
- Greenwich Park,
- Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens,
- St. James’s Park,
- Bushy Park,
- Holland Park (Kyoto Garden),
- Chiswick House & Gardens.

Timing Is Everything (And It’s Not Just About the Sunlight)
I love to photograph during the “golden hour”—that magical window shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the light is soft and flattering. And while it’s true that golden hour creates gorgeous images, there’s another factor to consider: your energy levels.
Pregnancy is unpredictable. Do not play much on the day of the session. Try to relax before. Comfort comes first. The last thing you want is to look beautiful but feel miserable during your shoot.
Dress for the Location, Not Just the Camera
That flowing chiffon dress might look stunning, but if you’re taking photos in a breezy meadow, you don’t want to spend the entire session fighting with the wind. Choose an outfit that complements the environment—earthy tones for woodlands, pastels for the pergolas, and deep jewel colours for an urban setting.
Fitted dresses that hug the bump beautifully work well for a more sophisticated look, while bohemian, flowy gowns create a sense of movement and softness. And don’t forget the footwear—heels in a grassy field are a disaster waiting to happen.
Pro Tip: layers work wonders. A light cardigan, a hat, or a wrap adds texture and gives you different looks without a full outfit change.
Natural Beauty Wins Every Time
If you’re not someone who usually wears a lot of makeup, this is not the time to experiment with a bold new look. A natural finish enhances your features without making you feel like you’re wearing a mask. The same rule applies to hair—soft waves, a loose bun, or even a simple half-up style often goes better than intricate updos that feel stiff.
Bring the Essentials
Outdoor shoots mean difficult access to bathrooms, changing rooms, or snacks. Here’s what you’ll want to pack:
- Water & light snacks – A hungry mama is not a happy mama.
- Bug spray (for nature shoots) – Because itchy mosquito bites are not the kind of memories you want to keep.
- Comfortable flats for walking – You can switch to barefoot or stylish shoes for actual photos.
- Hand-held fan (if it’s warm) – Especially if you’re shooting in the sun.
I have a portable changing tent. It makes outfit changes in outdoor locations much easier.
The “What If” Plan (Because Nature Has a Mind of Its Own)
No matter how well you plan, outdoor shoots come with variables you can’t control. Rain, wind, or an unexpected crowd at your chosen location can throw a wrench in your plans. That’s why having a backup plan is key.
Talk to your photographer about a plan B location in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. Often, a nearby covered space—a gazebo, a greenhouse, or even a beautiful indoor setting—can serve as a last-minute alternative without having to reschedule.
Relax. Seriously.
This isn’t about standing stiffly and “posing.” The best maternity photos happen when you forget about the camera and just enjoy the moment. Whether you’re laughing with your partner, cradling your belly, or soaking in the beauty of the surroundings, natural moments create the most emotional images.
Let go of perfection. The wind might tousle your hair. You might have to step over a muddy patch. And that’s okay. Pregnancy is messy, magical, and real—and that’s exactly what makes it beautiful.
