Joanna – Maternity Session at Buckingham Palace, City of London

Usually, my clients prefer more private settings for their maternity or family sessions. However, I convinced Joanna to choose Buckingham Palace for her session. Why? Buckingham Palace offers a unique and regal background for a maternity session, making it both classic and timeless. The grandeur of the area reflects a sense of celebration and significance, perfectly matching the joy and anticipation of expecting a new member of the family, all with a touch of elegance.

Photographing maternity sessions in iconic locations like Buckingham Palace comes with its own set of challenges, especially when dealing with crowds. If you are looking to capture some beautiful moments in busy places, here are some tips to help you stay prepared for the hustle and bustle of the session:

  • One of the best ways to avoid crowds is to schedule the session during off-peak hours. Early mornings or late afternoons are usually less busy, and you will also benefit from the soft, flattering light that these times offer. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends. For example, we started our session with Joanna around 6 am.
  • Before the session, I like to take some time to visit the location and scout out quieter spots. Even the most popular sites often have hidden corners or beautiful backdrops that are less crowded. I try to look for unique angles or spots where I can create the illusion of solitude, even in a busy setting. Additionally, preparing a detailed session plan helps the session flow smoothly on the day of the shoot.
  • In crowded places, we may not have the luxury of setting up elaborate shots. Be ready with quick setups and easy poses that do not require a lot of time or space.
  • Patience is crucial when photographing in crowded areas. There will be moments when we have to wait for a gap in the crowd or adjust the composition on the fly. We can use this time as a short break.
  • Instead of fighting the crowd, sometimes it’s best to embrace it. The people around can be used as part of the scene, which can add a lively, dynamic feel to the photographs.
  • Crowded places can be unpredictable, so be prepared to move around frequently. If a spot becomes too busy, we will simply move to another area. Staying flexible and adaptable is key.

While iconic locations like Buckingham Palace can add a unique touch to a maternity session, it’s important to keep the mum-to-be comfortable. Crowded spots can be tiring due to longer waits and navigating through people. To balance the experience, I will use the iconic location for part of the shoot and spend the rest in quieter, more relaxed settings.
