Lifestyle Newborn Photography in North London, Hampstead Heath

I often receive requests to include dogs in newborn photos, and I fully support it! Your dog is an important part of the family, and with a few precautions, we can capture beautiful moments that include everyone, safely and naturally.

Safety First

While it’s heart-warming to have your dog in the frame, safety is the number one priority when combining newborns and pets in a photoshoot. Whether your dog is large and energetic or smaller but playful, we can find creative ways to include them without compromising your baby’s safety.

Most dogs are great at being near the baby but kept at a safe distance. Photos of your dog sitting at your feet, peeking into the crib, or sitting calmly next to the family are very achievable. If your dog is particularly calm and gentle, we might even capture sweet moments with them laying near your baby on the bed—but always with a parent nearby.

I always advise that one parent be within arm’s reach of the baby in case any sudden movements need quick intervention. As a photographer, I encourage you not to worry about the perfect shot; instead, focus on keeping your newborn and pet comfortable and safe. If you need to step in at any time, please feel free to do so there’s no pressure!

Prepare Your Dog

If your dog tends to be a bundle of energy, it might help to get some of that energy out before the session. A good walk, a run in the park, or a play session in the morning can help your dog settle down for the photoshoot.

Introductions Are Key

Before the photoshoot, it’s essential to ensure your dog has been introduced to the baby. This way, your pet won’t be as curious or alarmed by the baby’s presence or noises during the session. Knowing how your dog reacts to your newborn will help us prepare for the best approach during the shoot.

When I arrive, I’ll also take the time to meet your dog. I’m a true dog person and have experience working with all sizes and temperaments so you can relax knowing I’m comfortable with your furry family member. Don’t hesitate to let your dog greet me at the door, we’ll be friends in no time!
